Quick Facts
More About This Project
Mizoram has insufficient power generation capacity to cover local electricity demand. In addition, many of hydropower plants in Mizoram are without a reservoir/dam, making them prone to seasonality and varying weather conditions. Insufficient generation capacity and the intermittent nature of own sources of electricity have forced Mizoram to rely on relatively expensive electricity purchases from other states which reach 78% of its total electricity consumption.
At the same time, only 5% of the total hydropower potential of Mizoram has been developed. Expanding hydropower generation capacity with dams/reservoirs to reduce their intermittency is an efficient path for Mizoram to leverage its natural endowments and reduce energy cost.
The Project envisages construction of 24 MW hydropower plant, including construction of an earthen fill dam of 92-meter height to regulate water flow.
The Project will also focus on activities aimed at institutional capacity building of the Project Entity, such as an enterprise resource planning software system, development of a scale model of the hydropower plant, and others.
The Project aims to reduce Mizoram’s energy cost by expanding its hydropower generation capacity. The Project is expected to avoid annual CO2 emissions by 48,500 tonnes per year.
