More About This Project
Maceió’s public transport system faces severe challenges that necessitate further development of its urban transport infrastructure, particularly along its busiest corridors. Chronic congestion has resulted in operational inefficiencies, slow speeds, and extended travel times for commuters. Consequently, these shortcomings of the public transport system led to a rapid growth of private vehicles, compounding the urban mobility issue. This shift toward private vehicles has aggravated congestion, particularly along its main corridor – Avenida Fernandes Lima, further straining the transport network and leading to higher greenhouse gas emissions.
The proposed BRT system is a crucial response to Maceió’s escalating mobility challenges and evolving urban landscape. The BRT line will be developed along Avenida Fernandes Lima and integrate with 80% of the bus lines in the city, serving 66.9% of Maceió’s population. Besides, the Project includes a modern intelligent transportation system designed to transform public transport operations in Maceió, which not only ensures the operational efficiency of the BRT system, but also streamlines city-wide traffic flow of the entire public transport system.
The Project comprises the following key components:
● Component I – Development of a BRT System: implementation of bus lanes and associated infrastructure, including a dedicated BRT corridor along Avenida Fernandes Lima, pavement rehabilitation of BRT feeder lanes, construction or upgrading of BRT terminals and bus shelters, and fleet acquisition.
● Component II – Intelligent Transportation System (ITS): development of an advanced ITS which will primarily enable centralized management of the BRT system, while certain smart systems will have a broader application across the city’s public transport network.
● Component III – Capacity Building, Institutional Strengthening and Project Management: this component focuses on strengthening the capacity of key project stakeholders to ensure smooth project implementation.
The Project aims to contribute towards achieving enhanced mobility and improving the overall quality of life in Maceió. By facilitating a safe, reliable, and affordable mass-transit transport system for the local population, it will expand access to workplaces, education, and essential services for public transport users throughout the city. Additionally, the project aims to prioritize the use of public transportation and discourage the use of individual transportation, fostering a more sustainable and efficient urban mobility system.
