More About This Project
The Municipality of Aparecida de Goiânia (PMAG) is the second largest city in the state of Goiás with a population of 602,000 in 2021. Since the 1990s, PMAG has been transforming from a dormitory city to one of the five industrial hubs in the state, representing 10% of the state’s industrial output with over 2,000 industries ranging from the agriculture to pharmaceutical sectors. This transformation has caused a 238% linear population increase and led to disorderly expansion of neighborhoods resulting amongst other things in challenges in urban mobility and insufficient social infrastructure.
The Project comprises the following key components:
i) Street paving with stormwater drainage system – Includes paving approximatively 214 km of streets, to achieve 100% of the city street network paved.
ii) Bridges, Underpasses and Overpasses – Construction of four bridges, two underpasses and two overpasses to improve mobility and connectivity.
iii) School Buildings – Construction of 15 school buildings, including 11 for early childhood education (ages zero to five) and four elementary schools (ages five to ten).
iv) Park Refurbishment – Four parks covering a total area of approximatively 351,000 m2.
The Project aims to: (i) improve the urban mobility by paving city’s streets and upgrading key access points to reduce average commute times by 12% (from 31 to 27 minutes) throughout Aparecida, (ii) promote social equality through increasing in ECE and ES enrolment by more than 9,500 and 1,800 children respectively, and (iii)enhance livelihood of the city by improving community parks to make them accessible to 50,000 visitors monthly.
The Project will contribute to economic and social development of Aparecida in line with its Master Plan.
PMAG through Municipal Secretariat of Infrastructure will be responsible for implementing the Project, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and achieving its results. The implementation period of the Project is five years, starting from the Q1 of 2024 till the end of 2028.
The Project has been classified as “Category B” in accordance with the NDB Environment and Social Framework. The main Project’s Environmental and Social impacts include: (i) permanent acquisition of land and potential small-scale involuntary resettlement; (ii) loss and disturbance of natural habitats; (iii) soil erosion and silting of water bodies; (iv) traffic disturbance, community safety and nuisance; (v) disruption of municipal utility services; (vi) increased heavy traffic; (vii) construction induced pollutant emissions; and (viii) occupational health and safety risks.
The Project will be financed through the loan from NDB and counterpart funding from the municipality’s budget.
