At the signing ceremony for the Brazil Smart Hospital Project held in Brasília on January 7, 2026, NDB President H.E. Mrs. Dilma Rousseff joined H.E. Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil and Mr. Alexandre Padilha, Minister of Health of Brazil.

The Project proposes the development of a smart hospital in São Paulo – the first of its kind within Brazil’s public healthcare system. This advanced, scalable, and integrated facility will specialize in emergency medicine, intensive care, and neurology. Successful implementation of this pilot project will serve as a model for nationwide replication and technology transfer, significantly strengthening Brazil’s capacity to deliver high-quality, technology-driven healthcare.

The Project envisages a new 120,000 sq. m facility that will include emergency care units, intensive care units, regular wards, emergency care chairs, operating rooms and outpatient consulting rooms, equipped with digital systems enabling telemedicine services, artificial intelligence-based scheduling, electronic health records, clinical decision support, a hospital command centre, and a national centre for translational research and innovation.

During its 49th Meeting held on December 4-5, 2025, the Board of Directors of the New Development Bank approved a loan of up to USD 320 million to the Federative Republic of Brazil for the Brazil Smart Hospital Project to be implemented in São Paulo.
