On October 23, 2024, H.E. Mrs. Dilma Rousseff, President of the New Development Bank (NDB), held a series of meetings with distinguished leaders and heads of delegations from BRICS Plus/Outreach countries. These meetings were held on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.

NDB President met with H.E. Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, to discuss, among other topics, the NDB’s role in supporting infrastructure and sustainable development projects in the member countries of the Bank. The two sides identified several potential areas of partnership, including in education and technological development, social sector support, modernization of industry, infrastructure and logistics, digitalization, energy and utility networks.

H.E. Mrs. Dilma Rousseff had a meeting with H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. NDB President emphasized the significance of the upcoming 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, COP29) to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in November 2024. She noted that climate finance is a priority for international financial institutions, including NDB. During the meeting, cooperation opportunities of mutual interest were explored.

NDB President met with H.E. Mr. Sugiono, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Mrs. Dilma Rousseff noted that that Indonesia’s national strategic programs match the NDB’s mandate and highlighted the potential for future cooperation. New Development Bank supports infrastructure and sustainable development projects in alignment with the development objectives of its members, said Mrs. Dilma Rousseff.

H.E. Mrs. Dilma Rousseff had a meeting with Sri Lanka’s Foreign Secretary Ms. Aruni Wijewardane. At the meeting, possible areas for cooperation between NDB and Sri Lanka were discussed. Mrs. Dilma Rousseff noted that NDB is a multilateral development bank aimed at mobilising resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging markets and developing countries.

President Rousseff had a meeting with H.E. Mr. Mohd Rafizi bin Ramli, the Minister of Economy of Malaysia.

Throughout these engagements, Mrs. Dilma Rousseff underscored that NDB was established by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) with the purpose of mobilising resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging markets and developing countries. She reiterated the Bank’s commitment to supporting infrastructure and sustainable development projects in alignment with the development objectives of its member countries and their commitments under the SDGs and the Paris Agreement.
