Alashankou, located in Xinjiang’s Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture on the China-Kazakhstan border, is a vital gateway on the New Eurasian Land Bridge connecting China with Central Asia and Europe. With international trade in Xinjiang growing at a 40% compound annual rate in recent years—far exceeding the national average— Alashankou’s role as a logistics hub is crucial. However, rapid trade expansion has outpaced the development of port infrastructure, creating an urgent need for modernisation.

Recently, NDB completed the fact-finding mission for the Xinjiang Alashankou Port Infrastructure Development Project, supported by a proposed RMB 2.9 billion (USD 400 million) loan. In parallel, NDB organised six targeted knowledge sessions in Xinjiang to build local capacity, enabling project stakeholders to adopt advanced technologies, and international best practices. These sessions included workshops on logistics automation, digital transformation, port decarbonisation and corridor performance, plus technical trainings on sustainable procurement and project implementation.

This hands-on engagement strengthens operational efficiency, drives innovation and promotes sustainability—reflecting NDB’s commitment to delivering value beyond financing.
