Governors’ Statements

Statement by the Secretary, Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance of Bangladesh, H.E. Ms. Famita Yasmin (Alternate Governor for Bangladesh)

Hon’ble Chair Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman
Hon’ble Governors
President of the New Development Bank, H.E. Mr. Marcos Troyjo
Excellencies, and all present here,
Good afternoon.

  1. I would like to express my gratitude to all of you for the very warm welcome. I thank the members of the Board of Governors as well as my colleagues at NDB to extend continuous support to ensure Bangladesh’s membership with NDB. This is an exciting moment for Bangladesh as we are eagerly looking forward to building a solid partnership with NDB. Year 2022 is special as NDB is observing its 10th anniversary of the decision of establishing NDB and also because it is transitioning to the second 5-year strategic cycle. I congratulate all NDB members for the successful first 5-year and wish NDB’s continued success in the years to come.

  1. Excellencies,
You are aware that under the visionary leadership of our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Bangladesh economy has been performing reasonably well despite the severe disruptions due to Covid-19 pandemic. The situation is now looking more promising as the outbreak seems under control in our country. Therefore, we are optimistic that the momentum that the economy of Bangladesh gathered during the pre-Covid-19 period will soon return to that level again. To sustain the momentum, Bangladesh will need increased investments in critical areas such as physical infrastructures and important social sectors. Bangladesh aspires to become an advanced country within the next two decades and in realizing that goal the country will put significant emphasis on the development cooperation with NDB.

  1. Excellencies,
The world is now standing at a crossroad. On the one hand, unprecedented pace of innovation is taking the world to greater heights of development, and on the other hand, we are seeing rapid rise in risks emerging from geo-political tensions and climate change. History proves that we have the ability and will to overcome any challenges and hence let us all dedicate our efforts to overcome the immediate risks and leave a better planet for our future generations.

  1. Before I conclude, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to NDB once again for offering Bangladesh this significant opportunity to build a promising partnership.

Thank you all.
